Scoring your first orchestral piece in Steinberg Dorico is an exciting milestone. Dorico’s unique workflow is completely different from older programs like Finale or Sibelius; it is built around five task-focused modes (Setup, Write, Engrave, Play, Print) and handles complex layout issues automatically.
Here is the step-by-step roadmap to setting up, composing, and formatting your very first professional orchestral score. Step 1: Set Up the Orchestra (Setup Mode)
Before writing any notes, you need to assemble your ensemble. Press Ctrl+1 (Windows) or Cmd+1 (Mac) to open Setup Mode.
Use a Template: In the Hub window, choose “New from Template” and select an orchestral option (e.g., Symphony Orchestra). This automatically populates your project with standard instrument families.
Add Players Individually: If building from scratch, click Add Single Player at the bottom left. Type your instrument name (e.g., Flute, Violin), and Dorico will automatically order them according to standard orchestral layout conventions (Woodwinds on top, then Brass, Percussion, and Strings at the bottom).
Input Project Info: Press Ctrl+I / Cmd+I to open Project Info. Enter the piece’s Title, Composer, and Lyricist. Dorico will automatically place this metadata nicely onto your first page. Step 2: Establish the Foundation (Write Mode) Dorico – Your first score in 5 MINUTES!
